A new report out of Salinas addresses the importance of always properly restraining a pet in a vehicle when taking a trip. The article points to research from AAA and Kurgo from 2011 that suggests 84% of drivers don’t bother to place their pets inside of some sort of restraint system. And while the threat of pet-based distraction is well-publicized, only 29% admitted to their pets distracting them. With distracted driving in all its forms at the forefront of many public safety campaigns, the issue is of particular importance, but it’s also imperative to note that pets’ lives are endangered by not being restrained. They could be severely injured or killed in a crash, and if they’re behind a driver or passenger, they may shoot forward and harm that person as well.
