This past Thursday, the city of Norwalk, California benefitted from an operation by the Sheriff’s Departments of Los Angeles and Norwalk designed to crack down on those behaviors that could place a motorcyclist in danger. Motorcycle riders and drivers of automobiles were both subject to the ratcheted-up enforcement operation in place. Last year saw an uptick in the number of motorcycle crashes that took place within Norwalk (21, up from 16 in 2011). At the same time, injury rates associated with those crashes were reduced, and none of the accidents led to the death of the motorcyclist. Because accident data reveals that most accidents in California are related to alcohol consumption, ill-advised turns, and going over the speed limit, those activities received the brunt of enforcement attention.
