September is Rail Safety Month in California, and Amtrak, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the California Department of Transportation are partnering to raise awareness about this important issue. A new article takes a look at the myriad ways the agencies have worked to promote safety in the past and the present. For instance, Caltrans and Amtrak’s Be Track Smart campaign will offer advice and fact sheets about rail safety throughout the year. The Blue Line has received particular attention in recent years, and the efforts appear to be paying dividends, with a drop to three deaths in 2013 from the previous mark of eight in 2012. Schools benefit from ongoing presentations about Blue Line Safety, and the Didi Hirsch Suicide Prevention Center is now working with the MTA to reduce suicides on the tracks.
