A new report takes a look at those vehicles that were able to gain a Top Safety Pick ranking from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety since the agency introduced the frontal small overlap crash test. This test is designed to determine how an automobile would fare if it crashes into another object at its front corner as opposed to a head-on crash. These overlap collisions are thought to account for a whopping 2,500 deaths across the country every single year. Only one sport utility vehicle of the 2013 or 2014 model year, the Subaru Forester, achieved a “good” rating in that new test, leaving 13 others that did not. Subaru and Honda had three vehicles of various sizes that were able to acquire a Top Safety Pick moniker even with the new test, while Volvo had two.
