Today marks the first day in which it becomes illegal to text while at the wheel in the state of Florida. With the ban now in place, Florida joins the ranks of 40 other states that have passed a similar measure, although this particular law contains some caveats that some feel undercut the law’s ability to improve safety. The measure is a secondary offense, meaning an individual can’t be pulled over unless they’re engaged in some other illegal activity. GPS usage and placing a phone call are still admissible, as is texting if the vehicle is waiting at a red light. Plus, initial fines are only going to cost the texter $30 for his or her first offense.
