A new report from a CBS news team in Los Angeles takes a look at the efforts of state agencies to ensure that produce in the state of California is free of pesticides that could endanger consumers. They visited a Fresno lab under the authority of the Department of Pesticide Regulation that’s responsible for compiling and analyzing fruits and vegetables from around the area. Every week, samples are collected from places like the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, and those samples are put through lab tests designed to deduce the presence of heightened levels of 330 chemicals that could pose health problems. 98% of the samples analyzed last year passed the tests, and those that don’t are fined or asked to destroy those batches of product.
