State Farm has come out with the results of a survey they’ve begun to carry out annually that showcases attitudes and habits associated with distracted driving. By polling close to 1,000 drivers this past July, State Farm was able to deduce that 24% of motor vehicle operators have logged onto the internet via their phones while at the wheel of an automobile. This is a dramatic increase from the 13% that said the same thing four years ago, which may be the result of more and more people having smartphones than ever before. Over the past two years, the numbers of such phone owners have increased across the board, with the 40 to 49 year old demographic experiencing the biggest percentage increase, from 47% to 82%. Drivers also rated a variety of other potentially distracting activities as part of the survey.
