Widespread debate has sprung up in relation to a law that came into effect this past year in regard to the hunting of bears within California. The law bans the practice of using hunting dogs to corner the bears. The law was passed to prevent dogs from being harmed during hunts and to outlaw what some deemed to be a form of cruelty, as hunters were thought to be able to easily kill the bears once dogs had them trapped. But supporters say that the usage of dogs removed the risk of accidental and messy shootings of the animals. The matter will no doubt continue to be debated, but one thing that is understood by both sides is that the move has led to a reduction in the number of kills by almost half.
