Yesterday, there was a Distracted Driving Summit held in order to address some of the ways in which the rather dangerous driving act could be curbed. But summit or not, we still have quite a long way to go before distraction is squashed entirely. Not only do we have cellphones to contend with, but things like eating, smoking, and even GPS navigation can take our minds and eyes from the road.
The tips on hand from a new report from Wiltshire, United Kingdom focus on that last distraction: GPS. If you have one of these in your automobile or if you use your phone for the same, understand how to protect yourself from being in a wreck.
First off, set any destination before you leave, and if you ever have to change things up or take a closer look, please pull the vehicle into a nearby parking lot and make your examination from there.
You can also minimize distractions by putting the device somewhere like a cup holder rather than up on the dash where it’s necessarily going to draw your eye. At the very least, don’t let it block your sight. If you’re using the suction cup portion that comes with many a device, leave your vision unimpeded, and should the device fall, wait to pick it up until you’re off the road in a safe spot.
