On May 7, 2015, PSBR attorney Robert Glassman spoke at an all day seminar sponsored by The National Center for Victims of Crime. The event was held at Loyola Law School.
The seminar addressed the civil remedies that are available to victims of crime and how victims can find attorneys to assist them in evaluating their claims and finding justice. The speakers highlighted the benefits of civil actions, including the fact that victims often have greater control in a civil lawsuit than in a criminal case, can be compensated for the injuries and damages they have suffered and can hold people personally accountable for their crimes. Civil lawsuits also allow victims to sue other responsible parties (for example, the owners of the premises or the business where a crime occurred), leading to improved security measures.
Seminar attendees included victim advocates, mental health service providers, law enforcement officers, social workers, victims of crime and others who come into contact with victims and may be in a position to advise them of their rights.
