About the Recent Firestorm
In the days leading up to the catastrophic firestorm in Wine Country, the National Weather Service warned residents that conditions were prime for wildfires. Dry land, high winds, and low humidity levels all increased the risk of fires breaking out. The night of October 8th, the first fires sparked. Officials still do not know the cause of the fires, but there is an investigation underway that focuses on PG&E, the California utility company. It’s possible that the company’s negligence in maintaining its power lines and electrical infrastructure in Napa and Sonoma counties contributed to the wildfires.
All together, the 2017 October wildfires in California burned more than 200,000 acres, killed at least 43 people and firefighters estimate at least 8,400 structures destroyed by the fires, making these firestorms the deadliest in California’s history.
Across the Mendocino-Lake Complex, fires destroyed 447 homes – 136 of these in the Sulphur Fire. Fires in Mendocino Lake were vegetation fires that struck the communities of Potter Valley, Redwood Valley, and Willits. There were 1,493 firefighters on the scene with 63 engines and 47 hand crews. The fires in this region killed eight people. The air in Lake County became polluted with smoke from fires in Napa and Sonoma Counties.
